The media hype around social networks suggests that they are a new social phenomenon, indeed the fact that Facebook now has over 350 million users, and that each day we send over 55 million tweets via Twitter, does suggest wide spread take up. But in reality, communities have grown and thrived since the dawn of time, so are social networks really anything new?

To some, mobiles represent the ultimate in digital technology convergence, combining music player, camera, video camera, radio, TV, sat nav and much more, all in a device no bigger than a Mars bar. But to others, mobile manufacturers have lost sight of the fact that its primary function is as a communications device.
